What is a Check-Off Levy?

Throughout Canada, various agricultural agencies have been established. Many of these agencies have been granted the power by government Regulation, to set and collect a prescribed levy on agricultural products and commodities. The check-off levy collected is then used by the agency to advance their commodity sector. These agencies have and will continue to play a substantial role in the development and profitability of the industries they represent. Through the levies collected from producers, these agencies are able to invest in the future of their sector through research, development, promotion and marketing initiatives. These agencies are a good example of producers taking responsibility and control of their own industry, and investing in the future of that industry.
